Local racer makes it big

Marcus Phelps' special motocross trick is winning as he brings another title home.

Local motocross star Marcus Phelps is breaking records in international championships and is bringing home the titles.

Marcus competed in his second and third American Motocross Championships this year.

His hard work and dedication paid off when he walked away winner of the Winter Junior MX AM Series.

To date he has won three American Championships, on top of his British Arenacross Championship title last year.

“Marcus is a good example of South African youth flying the flag high for SA,” said his grandfather Len Phelps.

Marcus took some time off from his busy schedule to catch up with the news in an interview.

Marcus’ love for extreme sport was inspired by his grandfather’s international motorcycle road-racer career in the UK in the 60s and 70s.

“He is our role model, the love of motorcycle sport was passed on to our dad, who raced motocross in the UK and SA, and in turn we naturally adopted the sport through their love of the sport,” commented Marcus humbly. The motocross star prefers a KTM bike and reveals his special trick, which is winning of course.

His secret to success is not lucky charms but rather a good night’s sleep before competition day.

Marcus is hoping to be a Pro MX rider for KTM.

“Pro MX rider for KTM is both my and my brother Nicholas’ ambition. KTM currently is interested in us and are aware of our successes in SA, UK and USA. Fingers crossed.”
