I am writing this as I don’t know where else to go.

The landfill site in Krugersdorp is becoming a health hazard, and the local government is not doing anything to stop this. Why not? Can this not be investigated?

The latest communication that the Krugersdorp News received from the municipality regarding the matter was at the end of August.

In the article with the headline Fire outbreak at landfill site: Cause identified, the Mogale City Integrated Waste Management Operations team confirmed they were on site on August 28 to investigate the cause and confirmed that progress was made. Waste Management Operations also reassured residents adjacent to the landfill site that no residential areas are currently under threat due to the fire that took place recently.

Additionally, as a means of minimising inconvenience for residents and ensuring that daily operations at the landfill site are minimally affected, the operations team identified a small suitable portion within the landfill site that will be utilised in the interim. This identified area is currently being prepared to ensure the safe disposal of waste for members of the public and waste services personnel. The municipality therefore appeals to residents to not visit the landfill site and dump illegally while work is underway. Residents will be notified once this site is safe and ready for public use.

The Integrated Waste Management team would like to convey its gratitude to residents for their patience, co-operation, and understanding over the weekend. Mogale City Local Municipality will also continue to provide updates and plans concerning the matter.
