LETTER: Pastor’s happily ever after, healthy marriage tips

Time for your spouse is essential for a happy, lifelong marriage – local pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

I am a hopeless romantic.

43 years of marriage and my wife still has to endure my silly talk. I once said to her that I think I love her more than God loves her. She was shocked and I was quickly told not to say that. I explained that God sent his son for her while I would have come for her myself.

Please don’t get onto your religious horse. It was said in poetic, romantic silliness.

But 43 years and still on honeymoon. Do I have any advice to help people to cultivate a happy and healthy lifelong marriage? Yes, I do. These simple points all start with a “T”.

If you want a happy, healthy marriage, you must be willing to put in a lot of time.

Marriage is a living thing between two living people. Time for your spouse is essential for a happy, lifelong marriage. Number two is also important. Your spouse must know you think about him or her. An SMS, WhatsApp or phone call just to say, “I love you”. Date nights, flowers and chocolates saying, “I was thinking of you”.

Express appreciation. Say thank you.

When you get old, it may be that your marriage is the most valuable asset you have. Thirdly, the trinity. Let God be part of your relationship on a day-to-day basis.
