LETTER: West Village power: ‘We do not know where to turn to’

Please, please can somebody help us to get our electricity reconnected? – West Village resident

• Sarah Schoonwinkel writes:

I write to you in desperation from a small, poor community in Krugersdorp known as West Village. Last week, during the night of 21st June, one of the supply cables to the Village was stolen. An attempt was made to restore the supply whereupon an attack was launched by heavily armed zama zamas who stole another section of cable.

On Monday morning several Eskom vans accompanied by police vans arrived on site and commenced what we thought would be an electricity restoration mission. When I returned home from work they were nowhere to be seen leading me to conclude that the reconnection had been effected. I was wrong and we endured another night without electricity. Tuesday morning they returned and repeated the same performance, with precisely the same outcome.

And yes, you are quite correct: Wednesday morning saw the same scorpion dance resume. My husband decided to pay them a visit earlier on today to ask them when we could expect to have our supply reconnected only to find not a single soul on site. He heard a rumour that the ‘technicians’ had ordered the incorrect cable and this is why they had struggled for three days to connect something that was not intended for the purpose.

Could somebody please intervene and get an actual, real, licensed and registered electrician on site to effect this repair? Eight nights and seven days without electricity and everything in our fridge must now be thrown away.

We have had absolutely no feedback from anybody. Asking our local councillor for help or information is a fruitless exercise in futility and frustration. I know that we are not a fashionable community but our money is the same colour as everybody else’s and we surely can expect the same level of service and assistance as afforded our more affluent neighbours.

Please, please can somebody help us to get our electricity reconnected? This is beyond a joke and no longer tolerable. Calling Eskom in Randfontein results in a ringing tone culminating in a message telling us that nobody can take our call. Over and over and over. Are they all dead ? Did the aliens land and transport them away? The level of service is beyond ridiculous.

Please help us! We are at V213, Main Gate Close, West Village and the entire Village is without electricity.

I look forward to your response and I thank you for your kind attention to my desperate attempt at obtaining help. We do not know where to turn.
