An act of appreciation

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

The busy parking lots, the masses in the malls are not pleasant. Most of us hate shopping. Buying gifts for people that already have everything. But Christmas is all about gifts for most of us. If it is true that your attitude will determine your altitude, then we can understand why buying the gift is not so easy.

Great advice for a shopaholic is, if you are going out for your grocery shopping, first eat a big meal. Yes, it works. If you are hungry, everything looks so nice. But if your tummy is already full, you tend to buy only the essentials.

When you go out to do your Christmas gift shopping, maybe stop and think first.

What is Christmas about, where does it come from and what is the true spirit of Christmas? The truth is, Christmas has nothing to do with gifts or food. It is about love. Firstly, God’s love for all of us. Secondly, it’s an annual reminder of events 2000 years ago. Wise men, angels, shepherds, Joseph and Mary. But don’t forget, at the heart of Christmas is Christ.

Your gift and mine is not a religious act, it is an act of appreciation.

God gave his Son, his Son gave his life.

You and I need to give more than a gift, but a gesture of our appreciation of each other. A gift is an expression of love, not a duty performed under duress.
