God’s favourites?

Pastor Gerrit Mes – "For God so loved the world ..."

I was born and raised as a Christian. I was never taught that God only loves Christians, but looking back now, it was implied.

Christians, I thought, were God’s favourites.

Recently, as I looked at a number of Scriptures, I realised how wrong I was. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world …” Psalm 139 clearly states that God wove us together in our mother’s womb. Psalm 139 also states that all our days were numbered before one even started.

It is not a unique Christian problem. I think that most religious people believe that God loves some people more than others.

Looking back on my life I can trace my relationship with God to a particular moment. A moment when I reacted to His voice calling me and Him knocking on the door of my heart.

But it was such a eureka moment when I realised that His relationship with me started in the womb.

It may be an uncomfortable thought, but truth is truth. God loves

8 billion people. He created them all. He even loves the people you and I may hate.

I don’t claim to understand the logistics, but I am convinced that God loves all of us equally. From the deacon with his white tie in church on a Sunday, to the young woman selling her body to survive.

It is not true that God loves good people more than bad people. Jesus said the shepherd left the 99 to find the one. I was the one, so are you.
