Your safe place

Pastor Gerrit Mes – "Some people find their safe place in front of the TV".

All of us have a hiding place when the world becomes too much to bear. Dark clouds have gathered and your giants are working as a team against you. You understand so well the cliché, “It never rains, it pours”.

My safe place, my refuge is in the church. Be it on a Sunday with hundreds of people also looking for a refuge, or by myself in God’s house. I love going into the church building. I know what you are thinking. There must be lots of hypocrites in church.

Yes, unfortunately you are right. But I go to church not to see people, but to see God. There are plenty of hypocrites at Pick n Pay, Checkers and the SPAR. But I need to buy food so I go there despite the people.

Some people find their safe place in front of the TV, at a cinema or a drinking hole on the way home from work, or pushing a trolley through a crowded mall, feeling so very alone.

Jesus, in His lifetime, also had a desire and a need for a safe place. The Bible often mentions that He, early in the morning, went to a deserted place to recharge his batteries.

Where do you go to feel safe? People drown in life only because they don’t get a chance to catch their breath. Are you drowning? Stop, find a safe place and allow God to give you two things we all need – hope and direction.
