The reward-orientated generation

Pastor Gerrit Mes — “God, you don’t owe me anything, it is I that owe you so much.”

All over the world, people have the attitude of, “What is in it for me?” “You owe me, I deserve, I feel entitled.”

This sentiment is a part of our Christian orientation today. I go to church every Sunday, I read my Bible regularly, I pray a few times a day. Yes, and I keep most of the Ten Commandments. When the bag or collection plate comes around, I put in my share, therefore God owes me!

So my car should not break down, my house must have extra angels protecting it. And, yes, I should not get sick. “God, look at all I do for you.”

Jesus did everything His Father asked Him to do. Unselfishly and unconditionally, He served his Father’s cause. Yet, He was persecuted from birth. He faced danger on a daily basis. He was arrested, falsely accused, tortured and finally killed.

Surely, I thought, He could have felt God owed him something. Then I grew quiet. Eventually, I said, “God, you don’t owe me anything, it is I that owe you so much.”

Maybe in your moment of silence and solitude, you need to remind yourself of all God’s blessings in your life. And then to start saying ‘Thank you’ for all He has done for you. Maybe, like me, you need to stop and think for a moment about all you owe Him.

“Give to God what is God’s.”
