If you know you will die tomorrow?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

I asked my wife this question recently: “If you knew you had 24 hours to live, what would you do?”

At first she was totally uncooperative. Her answer was, “No one knows when they will die.” True, but if you did know, what would you do? Her reply was so special. She would like to spend her last 24 hours with us, her family. Why? Because her family is important. I wonder what you would do?

Maybe make right with God? Ask for forgiveness for your sins?

Maybe ask someone you have wounded to forgive you?

Maybe forgive someone that has hurt you? I don’t think anyone can ever really be ready to die. But if you are at peace with God and man it is easier.

Pen in hand, my mind was searching for things I would do. Then, like a revelation, I realised I must make peace with myself. Most of my battles have been with myself. If there is anyone I need to make peace with, it is Gerrit Mes.

A few weeks ago, I conducted a funeral in our local graveyard. I arrived about 30 minutes early. It’s not a pleasant place. I could not help but think of how many secrets lie here. How much baggage lies 6 feet below the ground? Then I made a commitment that when I die, I don’t want any baggage, not even hand luggage. I want to die a free man with no regrets. I walked away determined to make sure that I will be ready to die any time.
