Cancer curse

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

I wonder how you would react to these words from your doctor: “It is cancer.” Although some cancers respond to treatment, just the word is enough to create panic.

I don’t think anyone can prepare for such news. It may be good to stop and think about it for a moment.

Recently I spent an hour with a friend with Stage 4 cancer. He looked just like you and I, really healthy on the outside. He shared his amazing story with me. As I left his home, I felt so encouraged. Such faith is seldom seen in a church on a Sunday. Not faith in doctors, medicine or even faith in faith.

He is in a place where he has faith in God. No, you don’t understand. Many of us have faith in God doing what we want Him to do. But this man’s faith was very different. His faith was in God, doing what God decides. So the faith is not outcome-based, but ‘God-supreme-based’.

Another boost to my life was his simple but profound shift in priorities. It is now more about God, family and today. He does not fear death, but he is concerned about the journey.

Cancer can never be a blessing, but a blessing can come out of cancer. Thank you for teaching me, my friend.
