I am sorry

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Saying ‘I am sorry’ must be the three most difficult words to utter. We all make mistakes, we all fail at times in our lives, but to admit it, goes against the grain. Pride and ego hinder us from admitting that we were wrong.

Often, at the end of a trial, the judge or magistrate will use words to support his verdict. The words ‘showing remorse’ can be key to the sentence handed down. If a judge senses that a person has shown remorse, it can lead to a lighter sentence. If, on the other hand, there is no remorse shown, it can make the sentence harsher.

We have all made mistakes in life. I wonder if God is also influenced by signs of remorse in our lives.

Peter denied Jesus three times, Thomas doubted Him, while Judas sold Him for 30 pieces of silver.

After showing great remorse, Peter was forgiven, and trusted with God’s message to us.

Our prayers are generally filled with things we want from God. So I just have to ask myself, isn’t it time for me to use those three words, ‘I am sorry’ in my prayers? Looking back at my life, I have failed God and disappointed Him many times, I am sure. As I write this article, I feel true remorse for my actions and inactions. Maybe we can say, ‘God, I am sorry’.
