Planning for the future

Pastor Gerrit Mes: from the pulpit.

I recently Googled ‘Planning for retirement’.

Imagine my horror when I realised how many people are not nearly ready for their sunset years. I turned to my trusted Bible for words of wisdom. You can imagine my shock when I realised how out of step Jesus and the Bible is with 21st century financial advisers.

Now, whose advice should I take? The financial experts say I should have started to save for 65 with a portion of my first salary. By 30 I should have saved x; by 40, I should have had x plus, and by 60, I should have had x plus, and much more.

Jesus, on the other hand, told us not to worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow has enough problems of its own.

So, like a typical Christian, I have two brains, my Sunday brain and my rest of the week brain.

But then I started to look deeper into the Bible, and discovered that don’t worry about tomorrow does not mean don’t plan. In fact, the Bible is clear that during the good years, we should save for the lean years.

No one knows what the future holds. Jesus and the Bible are actually not so out of date or out of step with 21st century financial advisers.

Save, invest and don’t waste are all biblical behaviours. But most importantly, don’t buy what you don’t need, with money you don’t have, just to impress people you don’t even like. God bless.
