God and golf

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

For most of us, there is no link between God and golf. But maybe this unique game holds a key to how God may one day judge us all. According to many religions, a God will one day judge our actions, achievements, even our words and thoughts. Being God, most of us would expect him to be fair. But how can he fairly judge the child of a drug-addicted prostitute on the wrong side of town and the child born, black or white, into privilege.

We are all so different. It just seems so unfair that some will be punished even though they didn’t have a fair start.

What makes golf such an interesting sport is that I as a novice can play against a pro like Ernie Els. And, yes, it is possible to even beat him at his own game. In golf they have a handicap system, so I get a chance based on my past performances.

It is only a thought. Maybe the world would be a better place if religious people would stop trying to judge others and look a bit more closely at their own lives. Only God knows everything about you. He knows your heart. Maybe that is why the Bible shocks religious people with this line: “Prostitutes and murderers will enter the Kingdom before you.” Maybe the better your life was, the harsher you will be judged. “He that is without sin, let him cast the first stone.”
