Power of forgiveness

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Not all clichés or mantras are true. People often say “Time brings healing”.

This is so true when it comes to physical injuries but it is not always true when people suffer other types of pain. Sexual and psychological hurts often cannot be healed by time. Events at your school decades ago can haunt and hurt you till the day you die. Even hurtful spoken words can be remembered and recalled years later.

It is as if an event and an emotion together create a hurt that lasts forever.

How can we kill this pain that threatens our tomorrows?

Maybe one of the keys to healing is to choose to forgive. Difficult as it is, forgiveness is the most powerful instrument to use against the deepest pain we have.

Every one of us, without exception, carries painful experiences. That is why Jesus touched on the topic so often in his talks. Matthew 6:14–15 is more than a mantra, it is the path to inner healing. “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive you your sins.”

Forgiveness is a two-way street. Forgiveness is a personal choice. Choosing not to forgive has many short- and long-term consequences. You cannot change yesterday but you can, by your act of forgiveness, change tomorrow.

If Jesus could forgive, so can you and I. “I forgive”.
