How was your 2018?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

It is amazing how the way you will answer this question has more to do with your attitude than with your circumstances.

Most people, believe it or not, fall into one of two categories.

Group one are people who live as if every silver lining has a dark cloud. No matter what happens, they will see the dark side. The minority of people fall into the category who believe that every dark cloud has a silver lining.

Years ago I read a story about parents whose children were very different. One was a hopeless optimist, the other a pessimist.

So one Christmas the parents agreed to test their children. For the pessimist they bought a shiny 10-speed bicycle. In typical fashion the child ripped off the wrapping and cried out, “It only has 10 gears!”. He was not happy with his gift.

The other boy’s gift was a garage full of horse manure. As the parents opened the door, his face lit up, he grabbed a spade and started digging. His parents said, “What are you doing?” He shouted at the top of his lungs, “Where there is manure, there must be a pony”.

God’s children differ in the same way. Some Christians never appreciate the silver lining but recognise the dark cloud. Others say thank you for every and any blessing.

In which category do you fit? 2019 is around the corner.
