Who is your best friend?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Many people have a best friend, often from long ago. You may not have a lot of contact with that person but as soon as you are together it is like you have never been apart. If you have such a friend, you are very blessed.

Recently I read an old hymn we used to sing in church. “What a friend we have in Jesus.” As I read through the verses, I had to re-evaluate what a true friend is. Someone I can share my pain and joy with. Someone that cares about my well-being. A person that will be my friend no matter what.

For most of us, our friendships are both seasonal and conditional.

Jesus isn’t such a friend to me. As a child, my parents told me about Him. As I grew up, I read His book, the Bible. He has just always been there for me.

He helps me not to avoid my cross but to carry it. He listens to me when I feel sad. He has never judged me even though He hasn’t always liked what I have done.

Jesus may, to some, seem a strange choice for a friend, but for me He is the one friend that has never walked away. Family will disappoint, friends will disappoint, but this friend of mine is my rock. My prayer is that I will be the type of friend to others that He has been to me.
