What’s the point?

Pastor Mes; from the pulpit.

For anyone who picks up a copy of the Bible and opens it, it can be quite an intimidating experience –

66 books, 1 189 chapters and 31 102 verses.

That is enough to frighten anyone. Yes, there is only one clear objective of the entire Bible. Directly and indirectly there is only one theme in the entire Bible. From the first book in the Bible to the last, this one theme is like a golden thread. What is that one theme?

It is God’s effort to reconcile mankind to himself.

Preachers may by choice decide to emphasise and highlight any portion. From money you should give the church or rules you need to obey. For 2 000 years religion exploited this book, making it say whatever they want to promote. From a political agenda to outright manipulation and abuse, as we have seen so often in South Africa.

The truth is simple. If you can find the answer to one question, all else will make sense. “What’s the point?” But if you and I don’t know the point, life will never make sense. What’s the point is the question.

Love God and love your neighbour. It is very simple, so don’t let the church confuse you by making it so complex.
