When you are desperate

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

I recently asked a packed church a simple question, “If you have ever in your life felt that God has forsaken you, raise your hand.”

Before I asked the question, I thought maybe a dozen or so would respond. You can imagine my surprise when hands went up all over the auditorium. Yes, many people have faced such challenging times that they felt that God had forsaken them. It reminded me of the cry Jesus made from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Yes, even I have felt, in my moments of pain, that God had forsaken me. I also know how easy it is to grab at straws when you are hurting and desperate.

We often become willing to take advice from forbidden sources. The Devil loves it when we are desperate. He knows how quickly we can grab at any of his solutions. Solutions that in the long-term can cost you so much.

My advice, when you are desperate, is to go back to your roots. Read God’s Word, pray a lot and practice meditation.

Only God can help you. It is so sad when people turn to the stars for guidance, when they can turn to the one who made the stars.
