Religion’s fatal flaw

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

To survive in the 21st century you have to be smart.

Yes, life has become simpler in some ways, but in other ways it is very complex. To cope with the multitude of complexities in life, we put things into compartments or boxes. We have a compartment for work, another one for family, and a third one for recreation and hobbies. In fact, it has been said that men have a special box for nothing. For some of us, this is our favourite box.

The fatal flaw with religion, any religion, is that we tend to create a new box for it, marked ‘Religion’ or ‘Faith’. And all over the world, people add one more box or compartment to their already full lives.

Religion, unlike other things, should not be in a box. Salt only justifies its existence when it mixes with other things. Salt gives flavour, salt is an antiseptic and even a great preservative.

The DNA of true religion forces it to mix with all the other boxes.

Your faith and mine must affect the way we do our work, our family, sports and hobbies. Faith is not just for Sundays, it is for seven days a week. If it is not like that, we are in danger of hypocrisy, a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde situation.

It is a sad reality that some children see that their parents change from box to box. For instance, at church, daddy is so kind, patient and gentle, but at home he is rude, impatient and uses vulgar words.

Don’t add religion to your life in the form of a box. Allow your faith to infiltrate and enrich every area of your life.
