Faith without action

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

A story can often carry great value.

Years ago, a famous trapeze artist had a cable spanned over the Niagara Falls. He had the crowd in disbelief as he set off walking to and fro without falling. The cheers were deafening.

To build on his act, he placed a wheelbarrow with a special wheel on the cable and crisscrossed the falls. Finally he placed a 100kg bag of maize in the wheelbarrow. “Do you believe that I can do the same with this load?” There were no sceptics in the crowd. They all shouted their belief that he could do it. He set out gingerly, slowly making his way across and back. By now the crowd had grown in numbers and faith. They believed he could do almost anything.

He stepped up to the crowd, drank in their praise. Then he asked the crowd if they believed that he could push a person in the wheelbarrow across the falls. Every single person passionately expressed their faith that he could do it. Walking up to a person in the crowd, he said, “Sir, will you climb into the wheelbarrow?” The first, the second and the third person all said, “NO”.

A little boy stepped up, freckles on his smiling face and said, “I will.” Sadly, his parents quickly snatched him away.

With all your religion, all your faith, would you be willing to climb into the wheelbarrow if Jesus asked? Faith without action is no better than no faith at all.

Imagine that boy’s story for the rest of his life if his parents hadn’t stopped him.
