You made a mistake

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

On Sunday morning, as the service closed, a little girl ran up to me with urgency. “You made a mistake,” she said.

Not having a clue of what my mistake was, I asked, “What did I do?”

She pointed to the church ceiling, “There are two lights out”. Then the penny dropped. During the sermon I tried to illustrate how often we focus on the negative. Pointing to the ceiling I said that many people would not comment on the sixty burning bulbs, but they would point out the one dead bulb.

Well, this little girl was wide awake and noticed a second dead bulb at the back of the church. I did apologised.

But it is true that we focus on the negative in life and miss celebrating a miracle. A well-known Bible story proves my point. Jesus gave Peter permission to come to him by walking on water. All went well until Peter looked around him at the waves and started to sink. All of us focus on Peter sinking. That’s not the point. Out of the 12 disciples he was the only one with the faith to step out of the boat. He was the only one who actually could say he walked on water.

Caution, fear and doubt are some of the things that stop most of us from really trusting God.

As a Pastor, one of my portfolios is funerals. Some die at a young age, others live a long time. The sad thing is that some people, even after a long life, die without ever having lived. Step out of the boat; step into a new world.
