The power of addiction

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

The word addiction is often linked to a dependence on drugs, tobacco and liquor. Very few people realise that the power of addiction controls most areas of our lives. Innocent things like food and drink could also be classified as containing additives that are addictive.

So people may put ingredients into food to make us crave more.

I wonder if religion could be classified as possibly containing potential addictive elements. Could it be that through some additives into our dose of religion there may be a danger of addiction?

Sugar-coated truths, manipulating flavour, could it be that the loud music and flashing lights in some churches could be part of the addiction process? Jesus, once in a sermon warned about addiction. John 8:34, “I am telling you the truth, everyone that sins is a slave of sin”. Addiction, like many other things, is a form of slavery.

Repeatedly, through the Bible, there is a constant warning about the dangers of slavery. Innocent-looking things could be part of the slavery system.

The Bible says that we should be free. Are you really free?
