“No cross, no crown.”

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

“Elke huis het sy kruis”.

A direct translation into English is, “Every house has its cross”.

A ‘cross’ is an issue, a problem or a challenge. Rich people have crosses. All the money on earth is no guarantee that you will not have a cross. Some of us hide our crosses behind a smile or a joke. We use wealth as a smokescreen to hide our battle.

Recently, as I looked at the crosses the people around me carry, I realised two things. My cross is not so bad. Many people have crosses far bigger than mine. I also realised that a cross is not a curse. If your attitude towards your cross is right, it can be an asset.

As I carry my cross on a daily basis, I think of the cross Christ carried for me. I know that my cross is not as big as His was. I also realise that I need His help to carry my own cross.

But the thought that brought peace to my heart was this – a cross is not for ever. There comes a time when we can lay down our crosses.

Jesus once said, “Deny yourself, take up your cross daily and follow Me.”

Your cross is not your enemy, it may even be your friend. Your cross and mine are often God’s instruments to keep us humble.

“No cross, no crown.”
