Why do we even pay taxes?

CW Schoonwinkel from West Village writes:

The Mogale City Local Municipality is in the process of adjusting property values and while I would not want to debate the justification of these increases, I feel I have the right to ask what we as residents of West Village are getting for the taxes we pay?

I would like to highlight the following:

• Although West Village is a high pedestrian-traffic area there are no municipal refuse drums in this township, causing people to strew their rubbish anywhere and everywhere 24/ 7.

• Dumping of especially garden refuse is common and nothing is seemingly being done about it.

• Roads are in a bad state of repair compared to other areas in Mogale.

In view of the above I am wondering if the taxes we pay are applied elsewhere to more affluent suburbs perhaps? Or is it pooled with all other taxes to fund an employment agency where members of certain political parties are employed irrespective of qualifications or experience, channelling huge bonuses into their pockets?

As can be expected the Mayor of Mogale or any other official will not have the guts to respond to this letter but if by any chance they do, I will be interested to learn what they have to say.
