You and racing pigeons

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

It is amazing where you can get a special message from God.

It is not only in church on a Sunday. A few days ago, during my morning walk, I started to chat to a man that I have often seen on the road.

Almost every day, he releases and then admires his racing pigeons. When he feels they have flown enough, he allows them back into their enclosures. I wondered what goes through their minds every time he forces them to fly to nowhere.

Then I realised the important plot in the story. The pigeon owner knows Saturday is coming. He knows they will be driven one or two hundred kilometres away. Then they will have to fly back home. If they are not flying fit, they will never complete the journey.

As a Christian, I often become irritated by the little problems I face every day. Surely God should protect me. But like the owner of the racing pigeons, God knows Saturday is coming. In life I will face great challenges. If I am not faith fit, I will never make it home safely. So God often disturbs my nest, forcing me to exercise my faith so that I can grow strong enough to face tomorrow’s challenges. Faith, like fitness, is a force in us that needs to continually be exercised.

A simple sermon with great value for us.
