Play the ball

Pastor Gerrit Mes — from the pulpit.

In sport we use the expression, “play the ball, not the person”.

Basically this means you must keep to the rules and remember the goals.

Beyond sport, people often play the person, not the ball. Think about it. If you don’t like Donald Trump then absolutely everything he does is bad. If he does something good you presume his motive was wrong.

Closer to home, if you don’t like Julius Malema, then anything and everything he does is bad. You just don’t like him; you are playing the man, not the ball. Jesus was very different. He loves everybody. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son …” Everybody, yes, everybody. Does that mean that God likes what everybody does? No!

Romans 5:8, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”.

A truth my mom taught me as a child is still true today. There is good in the worst of us, and bad in the best of us.

Next time you are ready to judge another human being, stop and check if you are playing the ball or the person.

It is right to love people who are different, people who have different opinions or views.

It is wrong to condone things the Bible condemns.

We can love everybody, while we hate the sin in them.

You are not allowed to hate anyone. Amen.
