What if God was one of us?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Eric Brazilian wrote a song entitled, “What if God was one of us?” In the song he asks a few questions: “If God had a name, what would it be?” “If God had a face, what would it look like?”

Everyone has a picture of God in his or her mind. Some have a picture from a children’s Bible, a picture of Jesus holding a lamb or just gazing into space. Some might see Him kneeling, others may see Him on a cross.

Just the words “Father God” may link your mind to your picture of your earthly father – absent, abusive, cruel or kind.

The problem with your mental picture of God is that it will determine your relationship with Him.

Billy Graham, probably the greatest preacher of our time, died a few days ago, at the age of 99. He once wrote, “Since childhood I have been taught that God is kind of like a stern policeman, just waiting to punish us if we get out of line. But I am beginning to wonder if this is the whole story?”

Billy was doubting the picture in his mind. If you and I have the wrong picture of God, it could influence our relationship with Him. How accurate is your picture?

Maybe it is time to say, as Billy did, that your picture of God is not the whole picture.

If He had a name, what would it be and if He had a face, what would He look like?

Imagine if you could see the real God. Just imagine.
