Silence and solitude

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

You may not admit it but both silence and solitude are as rare as hen’s teeth. When last did you spend 60 fleeting minutes in absolute silence? No noise, just pure, perfect absence of all sound.

I would venture to guess – a long time ago. And when last were you completely alone?

In our 21st century madness these two, silence and solitude, are rare. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes have an overpowering desire for silence and solitude. It is as if I am exhausted by all the noise and crowds in my life.

Isn’t it ironic that the thing we need is the thing we fear. Many people switch on the TV even if no one will be watching, as if the noise is a comfort.

Instead of savouring a few hours of solitude at home, we drive to a mall to feel part of the crowd.

It may only be my personal pet conspiracy theory.

I think that the devil keeps us busy to stop us from finding God or facing ourselves.

The greatest minds in history, all treasured times of silence and solitude.

Maybe it is time to make time for silence and solitude.

Don’t be scared; relax, breathe slowly and allow yourself the luxury of a real spiritual experience.
