Success, a test of character

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Many books have been written about failure, pain and suffering. Amazing books about how people survived the most terrible circumstances. Books that give us courage in our own battles with giants and demons. It is so true that our darkest days contribute to the forming of our character. If it is true that life’s challenges build character, then it must be true that success tests that character.

We all know people who have achieved great success. People who, at work or on the sports field, have become household names. We respect them and in a way envy them. The fame brings with it great wealth and opportunities.

Isn’t it sad how often success changes people, and not for the better. People become their own gods. They have everything, know everything and can get away with almost anything.

They tend to forget where they come from and how fortunate they are. Instead of being generous and kind, they become arrogant, self-centred and self-righteous. They forget God’s words, “Naked you came into the world and naked you leave.” Coming from dust and, like others, returning to dust.

Maybe we all should look at our own test of character, success.

Next time you look at a beggar through the tinted glass window of your expensive car at a traffic light, say to yourself, “There go I, but for the grace of God.”
