Finding happiness and purpose

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

It was so exciting when one of my articles was confirmed in the real world. Last week I started my prayer for you as, “I pray that you find happiness and purpose”. Well, a few days later, as I walked to the shop, a car hooted and a young boy stuck out his hand and shouted, “Good morning, Pastor.” That was nice, I thought.

A few minutes later I stood in a queue at Pick n Pay when the same boy walked in. With a smile on his face, he gave the parking attendant a high five. Everywhere he went he just lit up smiles. I have known this boy for years. At one stage I was worried that he might have the wrong friends and going down a wrong road. But something changed.

As I walked out of Pick n Pay, fate had us leaving together. I got a handshake and a friendly reception. My response was, “You are looking great and happy, what happened?”

He told me with passion in his body language, “I have gotten my black belt in Krav Maga. And I am now an instructor.”

He found his purpose and that brought with it this amazing happiness. He was really beaming.

Let’s turn the light on you. Do you have a purpose, are you happy?

Religion can be a kind of purpose, and, yes, it can be the source of some happiness.

But truth be told, if you want to light up the people around you, you must first be lit up yourself.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world”. Do you have this light?
