Remember the reason for the season

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Christmas is only a few days away and I cannot wait.

It is the one day of the year that we all become children again. I come from a family and church that loves to celebrate the birth of Christ. Food, family – and don’t forget the gifts. I wonder, if money was no object, what you would wish for this Christmas.

Some people would love the basics – a house, a car or just a special meal. Many are spoilt and would want things that shine and cost lots of money. But Christmas is not primarily about getting. The spirit of Christmas should primarily be about giving. Isn’t it the Bible that tells us, “It is better to give than to receive”?

As we all prepare to remember the greatest gift of all, that God gave His Son for us, let us commit, not to the day but to the spirit of Christmas, this year, and share God’s good news of love with others.

Christmas 2017 will be one of the best for me and my wife. This year there will be a new addition in our home – our first grandson. So as one and all celebrate Christmas, let’s remember that Christmas is a time of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving for all we have received from God during the year and during our lives.

Maybe you can make a list of all your blessings and then be generous in giving to others to make their Christmas special.
