Dance in the streets!

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Two weeks ago the unbridled joy in Zimbabwe kept millions around the world glued to their television sets. A week of unprecedented ups and downs. Then finally the announcement that Robert Mugabe has officially resigned.

I am not from Zimbabwe but I know many Zimbabweans. Like millions of others, I was swept away by their celebrations.

It was only later on, when the TV was off and I was alone that I started to question their joy. Nothing has changed. One 93-year-old man is gone. The economy is still in ruins and no one knows what the next leader will do. Unemployment is still a big challenge. Millions of Zimbabweans are still scattered all over the world. Why the celebrations?

The answer is simple, and can be summed up in one word – hope.

Each one of us, in our personal lives, faces giants and adversity just like our neighbours to the north. You may also feel there is no hope, no solution to your problem. Moments of hope dashed by events beyond your control.

The Bible is full of verses about hope. We are encouraged to put our hope in God. Psalm 42:5 says God is called, “God of hope.” 1 Cor. 13:13 sums it up with this “Faith, hope and love”.

You need faith and you need love, but it is hope that gets you through the battle. If you have hope you can also dance in the streets until the sun comes up. You have hope as long as you have God. Amen.
