Is love more important than oxygen?

Pastor Gerrit Mes

I remember hearing this advert as a child: “Kiss it better with a Band-Aid strip.” The producers clearly recognised the importance of a bit of love to help their product. Love is what makes the world go round. We all need food, water and lots of oxygen. You can have all the above, but if you don’t have love, you have nothing.

The experts tell us that love is important in a young child’s development. If a child grows up feeling loved, he or she has a greater chance of being happy, healthy and successful.

Love is more than passion. It is a great power in us to overcome life’s challenges. Strange but true. When we feel a bit depressed, the first thing we experience is a feeling that no one loves us.

The topic of love is the most listed subject in any Bible concordance. Things like ‘love your wife’, ‘love your neighbour’, even ‘love your enemy’. It is the one thing above all else that we dream about, live for and at times are willing to die for.

But what is love? “God is love”.

We all need, above all else, to be loved and to love. In fact, if you call yourself religious, listen to this gem from the Bible:

1 John 4:8, “Whoever does not love, does not know God …”

When last did you tell someone that you love them? Do it today – tomorrow may be too late.
