Don’t allow stress to kill you

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Stress, the experts tell us, is behind many of our modern illnesses.

The other day I started to wonder whether stress is a modern illness that didn’t exist 2 000 years ago. I know people lived simpler lives, but surely they also experienced stress? Fear of highway robbers, foreign powers and wild animals, for example. The medical profession was primitive and surgical equipment questionable. Imagine one of Jesus’ disciples visiting a dentist.

But as you read the New Testament, Jesus speaks specifically about stress. In Matthew 6, reading from verse 25, Jesus acknowledges stress, using the word ‘worry’.

Don’t worry about food and drink. Don’t stress. He points out that there are more important things to think about.

He so beautifully points out how God takes care of the birds and the flowers. Then He touches our hearts by saying we are more important to Him than the things we stress about. Words of wisdom I have to remind myself of occur in verse 34: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself, each day has enough trouble of its own.” Plan, prepare, work, but in the end you and I must trust God.

Jesus must have endured lots of stress, but He knew who to turn to. Don’t allow stress to kill you.
