Depression can be beaten

Pastor Gerrit Mes

Do you suffer from depression? My personal answer would be, “Me, no, of course not”. But if the truth be told, I probably do experience times of depression. I may be physically exhausted, not sleeping my 8 hours a night, plus a few things in my life could be challenging me. I am human. Denying the truth cannot help us to deal with life.

I meet lots of people suffering from depression. The worst things you can say to a person experiencing some form of depression include: ‘Pull yourself together’; ‘You don’t have a reason to feel depressed’; ‘Count your blessings’. And don’t suggest taking anti-depressants.

Depression is a dark place or moment in our lives that we all deal with differently. In my little battles with moments of depression I do the following: I pray, asking God just to stay close to me. I make sure that I eat well and have enough liquids. I prioritise a ride on my “Big Boy” motorcycle in the country, I take a walk in the park, or play a game of tennis with my son.

With God’s help and the support of our family and friends, depression can be beaten.

Today, I thank God for all the light rays people shine into my life. May you be a ray of hope in someone’s life today.
