Has anyone ever taught you how to pray?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Growing up in church, I remember how beautifully some people could pray. They just had a gift. Other people had a reputation for getting results from their prayers. If you desperately needed a prayer answered, you should ask them to pray. Many people believe that my mother has a hot-line, direct to God. So even at 84 she still gets SMSes from people all over the world, asking her to pray for them.

Jesus” disciples watched Him pray and wanted the same results so they asked Him to teach them how to pray. I wonder whether anyone ever taught you how to pray? Maybe we can learn from what Jesus taught His disciples. He never said “Pray this prayer”, instead he told them to pray like this:

Five basic ingredients of that prayer have formed the basis of most of my prayers.

1) Give Him glory! “Hallowed be Thy name”. As you lift Him up, He will draw you to Him.

2) Ask Him to do what He knows best. “Thy will be done”. For me this is a moment of surrender to His will.

3) Ask Him for the things you need that day. “Give us this day our daily bread.” We all have needs – ask Him, He loves you.

4) Ask Him to forgive your sins while remembering that you too must learn to forgive. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive.”

5) Protect me from temptation. “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”

This is my template and it can be yours.

PS. Directly from one who could really pray – Jesus.
