‘Hang on, you will get through ok’

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Years ago, I heard an amazing story of a father and his young son. Off they went to watch a big soccer game. Close to 100 000 people were expected to fill the stadium. Lots of pushing and shoving as people tried to get to their seats. Then the father did a very clever thing. Concerned that he and his son would be separated in the crush of fans, he took the bottom end of his coat and put it into his son’s hand. “Hold on, don’t let go and you will be ok.”

When the father and son got home after the game, the concerned and relieved mommy asked her boy, “Weren’t you afraid?” His reply was special. With a sparkle in his eyes, and pure joy on his lips, he responded, “Mommy, I wasn’t afraid, I knew I had daddy’s coat-tail in my hand.”

As we go through life, there is a lot of pushing and shoving. It’s as if the Devil wants to separate us from our heavenly Father. Distractions, disruptions and disappointments break our contact with our creator. Fear sets in, panic takes over and in a split second we feel lost and alone.

Maybe the key is what the father said to his little son, “Just hold onto my coat-tail and don’t let go.”

Sure, if only you and I could hang onto the hem of His garment, we would be ok.

Yes, storms will come; yes, trouble we will have; but we will be ok if we can hang onto His coat-tail. My advice to you today is simple – “Hang on, you will get through ok”.
