Do you desire an authentic relationship?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

I was recently asked to do a lecture entitled, “Authentic relationship”, a topic I have never ever researched.

So my starting point was a good old faithful, my dictionary. Authentic – “Original, not a copy, genuine, real, not false or fake.”

Then I took it one step further, to authentic relationships. To my shock I began to realise that authentic relationships are extremely rare. Sadly, some of the people reading this article may even believe that such relationships do not exist.

I am an optimist. I believe not only that authentic relationships exist, but also that all of us desperately want such a relationship. If you are one of the people who want such an original, real, genuine relationship, read on. It starts with being authentic. You must be you, real, original, genuine. Be yourself. Now, build friendships based on love, trust and true compassion.

Make sure that your interaction with others includes the following key ingredients: simplicity, sincerity and sensitivity. Really care, be aware of other people’s needs.

Be willing to give time and effort. Be willing to risk hurt and disappointment.

Jesus said that if you do something for someone to get a reward, it is not genuine.

As a proud member of this community, I believe in authentic relationships. Coco Chanel said, “Hard times arouse an instinctive desire for authenticity.” In a world of false, superficial relationships, we desire authentic relationships.  Amen.
