What is the state of your conscience?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

It was so interesting a few weeks ago when our parliament voted by secret ballot.

Millions of South Africans were glued to their television sets. The argument was that if members of parliament could vote by secret vote, then they could hopefully vote by their conscience. My first thought was, if voting only by secret ballot will allow them to vote according to their consciences, what guides the rest of their voting?

You and I may not vote regularly but we all make decisions every day. I wonder what guides you in the decisions you make. Is it your conscience?

The Bible gives a serious warning, telling us not to rely too heavily on our consciences, as they may not be a good guide. According to 2 Tim. 4:2, there is a possibility that your conscience can be “seared as a hot iron”, or Titus 1:15, “… their minds and consciences are corrupted.”

The solution to our country’s problems is not to use our consciences to make decisions, but actually to heal our consciences.

The only conscience worth having is one that is clean and clear.

If we had a Godly conscience, most of our decisions would be very different. How we treat people who work for us is often a sign of the state of our national conscience.
