Smile a bit and see the reward

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Few people realise how old mirrors are. Mirrors are mentioned in the Bible. James 1:23 is a perfect example.

The writer speaks about someone looking into a mirror then walking away, immediately forgetting what they saw. Mirrors can be associated with vanity, and most of us see ourselves in a mirror a few times a day.

Next time you face yourself in the mirror, try the following: Frown, squint, pull a face and see what you look like. 100 per cent of the time you will look worse than your normal self. Now relax your face and allow yourself to smile. Yes, smile, with your mouth and your eyes. Try it. 100 per cent of the time your looks will improve. Years ago, I realised that I look better with a smile on my face. But even more important than my looks improving with a smile, my smile can bring a smile to others.

Strangers and friends, young and old, male and female, black and white, most people respond to a friendly face. You and I don’t know, but the smile we inspire on someone’s face could be the crack that allows a bit of light into someone else’s dark day.

Try it, smile a bit and see the reward you get blessed with.

Just a thought. Maybe even God responds more easily to a smiling face than a sour expression. We are so blessed by God, so let’s allow our faces to reflect his joy. Smile – it improves your appearance.
