I have this picture in my head of a dog chasing a bus. I wonder if the dog has a plan what to do with the bus once he caught it. Animals are not so clever, but luckily we as humans would never do that, or would we?
People chase success. Straight As in Grade 12, best university, years of sacrifice for a piece of paper. Then we work 12 of 14 or even 16 hours a day to get to the top of the ladder. Why? Success of course. But once you have it, what will it give you? Happiness, the biggest house, the most expensive car and lots of money in the bank probably spell success – but do they guarantee happiness?
Ecclesiastes 1:2 says, “Meaningless, meaningless, says the teacher. Utterly meaningless. Everything is meaningless.”
These words were probably written by the wisest man on earth, Solomon. He had it all and he knew what is going through the head of the dog chasing the bus – nothing.
You can chase success, happiness, pleasure or anything else. But first ask yourself, what is the point? “Fear God and keep his commands,” Solomon says.
Don’t look down at the poor dog. We know what he does when he catches the bus. He lifts his leg against the wheel.
Make sure what you chase is worth it. Amen!
