People say, “Silence is golden.” But for most people, silence is awkward – sitting in company where nobody says anything can be very uncomfortable. In a marriage dispute, people often use the “silent treatment” as a form of punishment.
I recently thought about church services, where we find silence awkward. Someone must talk, pray, sing or at least music must play in the background.
Total silence is almost more threatening to us than people talking.
Maybe silence is golden, not because it is so precious, but so rare. Noise pollution is a big thing in our lives. TV, radio, CDs break the silence, distracting us from everything.
Maybe this is part of the Devil’s ploy to block out God’s voice. Maybe we need times of absolute silence in church and at home, giving God a chance to speak into our lives.
Even just writing this article I find myself longing for a bit of peace and quiet. Imagine absolute, complete, perfect silence. So quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Yes, it may sound awkward but maybe it is what you need right now – going into your room, closing the door and waiting on God.
Silence does not just happen, you have to plan and prepare for it.
“Be still and know that I am God”.
