How rich are you really?

Pastor Gerrit Mes; from the pulpit.

Proverbs 17:1 says, “Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting with strife.”

So often we associate joy and happiness with things. We think that if we had this or that, we would be happy.

Many years ago a group of us handed out blankets on a bitterly cold winter’s day. A blanket’s value is no more than a few rand, and many of us have extra blankets stuffed in a cupboard. But on that day I realised the value of a single blanket to a person with no blanket. A warm, almost boundless joy, filled my heart.

Yes, it is true that giving is better than receiving. The Bible encourages us not just to give but to be generous. One of those amazing things Jesus promised is well worth remembering. Jesus said if you give someone even just a glass of water, you will never lose your reward.

With our country now officially in recession and reduced to junk status, more and more people need help. My prayer is that God will soften all of our hearts and make us a bit more generous. True wealth is when you have enough for you and your family and a bit to share with someone else. Rich is not how much you have, it is what you have.

Thank God today for all your many blessings. Yes, just a dry crust with peace and quiet is worth far more than feasting and strife.

Are you blessed?
