A blast from the past for Jannas class of 1984

It's been more than 40 years but Jan de Klerk's class of 1984 held a memorable reunion recently.

The class 1984 from Hoërskool Jan De Klerk High held its reunion at Die Kerksaal in Quellerie Park recently.

The blast from the past saw former school friends and classmates even teachers reunited yet again.

A total of 54 people attended the special occasion held on September 28 and according to the organiser of the reunion, Pieter van Heerden, it took him over a year to arrange everything.

“I started by looking up all my classmates on social media. I then invited them to a group and requested them help me find others so that nobody would miss out on the occasion,” Pieter said.

He added that once the number of people was confirmed, the real preparations began which included activities, themes, a date and a venue.

Hoërskool Jan De Klerk High, formerly known as Krugersdorp Junior High School, was founded in 1947. In 1951, the school later changed its name to Sentraal High School. In 1955, once the school was upgraded it would later change its name again to Jan De Klerk after a former South African politician.

The matric class of 1984 had a blast.

“In addition to an amazing lunch and dance, an ‘In Memoriam’ was dedicated to past pupils who died before the reunion in honour of them as they are steeped in the school’s history. Seventeen of our classmates and five of our teachers have since passed away so we made this section to embrace and remember them. Even if they were not there physically, at least they would be there in spirit,” Pieter concluded.
