Learners make a difference

Hoërskool Bastion learners and staff reach out to the elderly at Luipaardsvlei Home.

The learners and staff of Hoƫrskool Bastion embarked on a heartwarming community project in May where they reached out to the elderly residents of the Luipaardsvlei Home for the Aged.

This initiative saw collective efforts from learners and staff to make a positive impact on the lives of the elderly.

According to the home’s website, the home, situated in Lewisham, was established in 1975 as an initiative of the congregation of the local Dutch reformed church, which identified the need for a residential facility to help the elderly. It is currently an NPO offering services to older persons, from those who are still able to care for themselves, to bedridden and Alzheimer’s patients.

The learners and staff managed to gather a wide range of toiletries, as well as snacks and provided the elderly with necessities and some sweet treats to brighten their day.

According to Amanda de Jager of the school, this drive was led by the prefects of the school, and it was a way of giving back to the community and caring for those close to their hearts this winter.

Additionally, throughout this experience, the prefects learnt valuable life lessons and insights into love, compassion, and support for those who needed it the most from nursing home management.
