More than 3 000 cupcakes sold for kids with cancer

Two shopping centres and one mall in Krugersdorp welcomed the Cupcakes of Hope initiative to raise funds in combatting cancer.

Cupcakes of Hope recently visited Krugersdorp and embarked on a charitable mission to help those in need and spread awareness for a good cause.

According to the organiser Bianca van Vuuren, the aim was to sell cupcakes on September 28 at various malls in Krugersdorp including Key West Shopping Centre, Noordheuwel Shopping Centre and Cradlestone Mall.

She added that Cupcakes of Hope is an NPO and public benefit organisation aiming to raise awareness and funds for families in need of medical assistance. They do this through the love of baking cupcakes.

“We have several events during the year but our main event is hosting South Africa’s National Cupcake Day for Kids with Cancer in September. This is an entirely community-driven project and an amazing event that brings the whole community together for an awesome cause! As September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we distribute leaflets with the early cancer warning signs,” Bianca said.

In Krugersdorp alone, they baked and sold over 3 000 cupcakes for young children who are diagnosed with cancer. The organisation was founded in 2012 and has since baked over two million cupcakes in all the malls they have visited nationally over 12 years.

“Cupcake of Hope assists more than 230 patients every month by paying for their medical and other day-to-day needs. This year more than 2 500 Educational Activity Care Packs have been delivered to all 20 paediatric oncology wards across South Africa. During the past 10 years, the organisation has donated several wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs to children who lost their limbs due to cancer.

“Cupcakes of Hope has also supplied hospitals with much-needed medical equipment, and educational toys as well as doing hospital room makeovers. It’s truly amazing to see how the whole community comes together and uses their God-given talent to bless these little patients. We will continue to do everything we can to give them hope and support, they don’t deserve to fight this battle alone.”
