New packhouse facility to give egg farming industry a boost

The government says the launch of the Egg Aggregation Packhouse facility in Mogale City is a big step in improving the lives of small-scale farmers.

The Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment (GDARDE) and various public and private stakeholders and farmers gathered at the launch of the Egg Aggregation Packhouse facility in Boltonia recently.

The facility was established through a strategic partnership between the GDARDE and the South African Poultry Association (SAPA).

According to the MEC of the GDARDE, Muyiswa Ramokgopa, the facility will allow small-scale farmers and disadvantaged egg producers to aggregate for the continuous supply of eggs to the formal markets.

“This facility marks a game-changing moment for local farmers, enhancing egg production, packaging, and distribution and ensuring communities enjoy fresh, high-quality produce. As the largest egg-producing province in South Africa, Gauteng is committed to empowering farmers. This facility provides streamlined operations and opens doors to market access, allowing farmers to expand their businesses and reach new customers,” said Ramokgopa.

The chief director of the Agro-Processing Funding initiative, Motlatjo Makaepa.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the SAPA and the University of Johannesburg to drive skills development, ensuring our farmers have the expertise needed to innovate and succeed in this competitive market. This initiative is about more than just eggs; it’s about creating jobs, boosting the economy and fostering sustainable agricultural practices. Together, we are building a stronger, healthier future for our communities.”

She added that with support from the Agro-Processing Funding initiative, the facility will streamline egg production, packaging and distribution, ensuring that farmers thrive and communities enjoy fresh, high-quality produce, but it’s more than just a facility, it’s a gateway to market access for egg farmers, enabling them to reach new consumers and grow their businesses.

“This initiative not only empowers local farmers but also creates jobs and boosts the economy. We’re excited for the future as we work together to become stronger, healthier, and more sustainable. This is a leap forward in agriculture, providing new opportunities for farmers and delivering better products to our tables,” Ramokgopa concluded.
