Major efforts to tackle social challenges in Kagiso

Nthabiseng Nalane hopes to make a significant difference in the community through her organisation.

Making significant strides in the community has always been Nthabiseng Nalane’s mission through her organisation, Girls Grow Group.

The organisation is based in Kagiso and was founded in 2021. After being aware of the issues plaguing her community such as substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and issues mainly affecting young girls, they have since made a difference through their programmes and community outreach projects.

“I started the organisation after I saw an increase in teenage pregnancy, a rise of alcohol abuse among girls and them always being upset at school because of not having sanitary pads and often abusing drugs. It pains me so much as a single mother, knowing how it is to grow up feeling unwanted as a girl child. This is what inspired me to start the organisation and make a difference.

The organisation has assisted many young girls by providing sanitary products and offering several educational programmes to assist them in excelling in school.

“We help them with homework, empower young woman at an early age and make sure they realise their potential. We have many mentorship programmes that will ensure the girls are engaged with sports and life skills. We do one-on-one sessions that help them to be open and take that fear away to ensure they progress without feeling too much pressure.

“We don’t just want to assist young girls and women in the West Rand but would love to also reach other areas in the country,” she vowed.
