Police in Kagiso join hands with NGO for Mandela Day

Over 60 children from a crèche in Kagiso were spoiled with goods by police during Mandela Day celebrations.

Police commemorated Mandela Day by reaching out to over 60 children in Kagiso.

According to the West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police Social Crime co-ordinators alongside the station’s Youth Desk members honoured the South African and international icon Nelson Mandela by partnering with Sizwe Sechaba local crèche by treating them with goodies.

The goods were all donated and provided for by Krugersdorp President Hyper and other local businesses for assisting them with donations which made the event a success.

In addition to the programme, the police also gave a brief but informative seminar to the children, educating them not to talk to strangers, not to bully others, to report anyone who touches them inappropriately and to refuse to be sent to any place where they would be at risk to run errands. The programme formed part of the initiative by the police and the Department of Education to raise awareness for child safety in both the school and home environment.

“School safety is often a critical obstacle to learning. Crime, violence and abuse affect all aspects of our community, and schools are not always free from fear, intimidation or victimisation. The Department of Basic Education along with the police are committed to preventing, managing and responding to incidents of crime and violence in schools and prioritising safety for our children,” Sibiya said.
