Training man’s best friend to be protectors

The Krugersdorp News spent a day out at BCI Academy to witness first-hand training of K9s.

A dog is called man’s best friend because of their loyalty, love and compassion.

BCI Security’s dog training academy demonstrated this by holding a training session in which owners and dogs dressed in green and gold in honour of and support for the Springboks’ opening test of the season against Wales. They further enjoyed a fun session of obedience training and specialised protection.

The day saw 20 handlers with their dogs who all learned new skills and tricks preparing them to protect their homes and families.

According to the academy’s marketeer, Desire Brandon, the academy has been in operation for four years and continues to grow, ensuring that K9s are ready to take charge.

“We believe in giving each handler personal and individual attention while training, we generally use their dog to demonstrate how they need to handle them and afterwards we assist them step by step until they are fully trained.”

She also added that training dogs in the beginning stages is a process and it’s important for owners to understand that it takes several sessions for dogs to develop new skills.

“Dogs can be compared to children; not all dogs learn at the same pace. Therefore some dogs are more stubborn than others and take longer to act out an instruction. Our biggest word when you start at puppy class is patience.”
